Pousada reopening and adjustments

Since the 19th March the Portuguese Government declared the country in national crisis and set in place strict containment measures to minimise the risk of infection from Coronavirus. Portugal has been highly successful in limiting the infection and fatality rate across its population, which made it one of the first countries to start opening its borders with confidence, although a recent resurgence in greater Lisbon and some smaller communities has caused very secure measures to be re-implemented temporarily. Pestana Hotels and Resorts, including the prestigious Pousada network, have reopened many of their hotels in several stages with more properties to reopen shortly.

Currently the following Pestana Pousada Hotels & Resorts have opened:

  • 14 Pousadas: Arraiolos, Alcacer do Sal, Alvito, Amares, Pousada Cidadela Cascais, Crato, Estoi, Geres Canicada, Pousada Palacio do Freixo (Porto), Ria/Murtosa, Sagres, Serra de Estrela, Tavira, Viana do Castelo and Viseu
  • 4 Pestana hotels on the Algarve: Pestana D. Joao II Hotel, Dom Joao Villas II, Pestana Viking, and Pestana Alvor South Beach.
  • The Pestana Palace (Lisbon), Pestana Brasileira (Porto) and Pestana Cascais aparthotel
  • And in Madeira, the Pestana Cartlton, Pestana Bahia Praia, Pestana Palms and Pestana Grand.

And later in August and early September we expect the following 5 Pousadas will reopen:
Churchill (Madeira), Estremoz, Lisboa, Queluz, Vila Obidos.

On 1st September, the CR7 hotels in Lisbon and Funchal (Madeira) will open, along with the following Pestana hotels:
Sintra Golf, Vintage (Porto), and in Madeira: Miramar, Promenade, Vila Sol, and Village.

More news on the remaining Pousadas and Pestana Hotels will follow soon.

Restrictions on movement have been lifted in an organised manner and we await further news from the Portuguese authorities and UK Foreign and Commonwealth office about the introduction of an airbridge* with Portugal, to circumvent the quarantine restrictions in place for UK tourists returning into the country.

Pestana Hotels and Resorts, and Pousadas, have undertaken very strict hygienic procedures in the hotels that are now opening, and are taking these measures very seriously. As a result of the additional demands on their reception and cleaning staff, they have adjusted their check-in and check-out times to permit this to be carried out properly, so would you please note that for the time being, clients are being asked to delay arrival at these hotels until 4pm onwards, and to depart before 11am on the morning of checking out. Pestana hotels and Pousadas comply with Portugal’s new ”Clean and Safe” seal of Health and Safety measures, which commits each property and its staff to a charter of procedures and measures that ensures an extremely high level of cleaning and mindfulness of the risk of infection, so as to provide you with confidence.

The Portuguese Government has in the most part done a magnificent job of leading the country through the pandemic with the lowest infection rate possible, and you can inform yourselves here of their current measures and the procedures for tourists to heed:

We thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding as business and tourism now start to return to normal activity and service as usual (with an abundance of masks, gloves and gels). We hope that you are keeping safe and well.
